as posted by the channelThe family of a Black Florida teen who was bullied for months, falsely accused of threatening her school, and wrongly detained for 11 days in a juvenile detention center is filing a lawsuit against the charter school and a social media company.
One of Nia Whims' former classmates at Renaissance Charter School created a fake profile impersonating her threatening to bomb the school and kill others. A teacher reported the threat to police, and Whims was arrested. Whims denied making threats, and her family gave police her iPad as proof.
After nearly two weeks, Pembrooke Pines Police investigators realized the IP address did not match Whims. They tracked the 12-year-old down, charged the student with written threats to kill or do bodily harm, and falsifying a police report.
The lawsuit blames the social media site for not giving the police access to the accounts at the beginning of the investigation, and the school did not do anything to stop the bullying.
The school responded by saying, "Our highest priority remains the safety and security of our students. We always have and always will take all appropriate actions to ensure our students and staff are safe. We are not at liberty to discuss any private student issues, and we do not comment on pending litigation."
