16:19Now PlayingIn Detroit, black homeowners were unlawfully stripped of their properties by being overtaxed, leading to foreclosures because they couldn't pay the tax bill.
The city admitted to overtaxing homeowners nearly 600 million dollars between 2011 and 2016. The homes were assessed at 85-percent of market value; the Michigan Constitution says they can't be over 50-percent.
The Coalition for Property Tax Justice works with those impacted by the city's overtaxing.
Sonja Bonnett, a member of the Coalition for Property Tax Justice and Community legal Advocate at The Detroit justice Center and Kim Hunter from Engage Michigan spoke with Roland Martin about the overtaxation of African American homeowners in Detroit.
The Coalition for Property Tax Justice surveyed 200 homeowners impacted, and here are their top demands.
1. Cash Compensation
2. Repair grants, tax credits, and rehabbed land bank homes
3. Apology and transparency from government agencies
