A new law in Arizona could prevent and punish bystanders from recording police incidents.

Arizona's Republican Governor Doug Ducey signed a law requiring bystanders to be a minimum of 8 feet away from the incident. Disobeying an officer's command could land a person with a misdemeanor charge, fines of up to $500, jail time of up to 30 days, or probation of up to a year.

This law comes after the Department of Justice's investigation into the Phoenix Police department for excessive force and discrimination against people of color and the homeless.

Opponents of the law say it will reduce the power of video recordings in holding police accountable for their actions.
