as posted by the channelFifty-seven years after the voting rights act of 1965 passed, black people in Alabama are still fighting to keep their constitutional rights.
The Supreme court will hear arguments on Tuesday about the constitutionality of Alabama's republican-drawn congressional map.
A lower court agreed that the redrawn congressional map violated the 1965 voting rights law by having only one district where black voters make up the majority. The Supreme court removed a provision of the Voting Rights Act that permitted the Justice Department to check election laws in states with a history of racial discrimination. The court will look at similar voting rights cases in North Carolina and Louisiana in the upcoming weeks.
Here to discuss the case in more detail are two plaintiffs, Khadidah Stone, Kress Programs Coordinator and a grassroots community organizer for the Alabama Institute for Social Justice. And Shalela Dowdy, CROWD Fellow with the Southern Coalition of Social Justice.
