Griner appeared virtually in the appeal hearing and urged the court to reassess her sentence.
Griner, detained in Russia since May, was found guilty on drug charges in a Moscow-area court on Aug. 4 and sentenced to nine years in prison. Her attorneys filed an appeal on Aug. 15. The State Department spokesman Ned Price made a public statement earlier in the month that securing the release of Brittany Griner and Paul Whelan remains "a priority for this administration."
