YouTube Description
as posted by the channelIn California, a group of survivors and descendants of those forcibly removed from their homes in the heart of Palm Springs in the 1950s and 1960s is seeking billions in damages against the city.
The area knowns as Section 14 is a 1-square-mile section of the city that lies adjacent to the city's downtown. It was owned by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and was the primary residential area for minority residents from 1930 to 1965. They built hundreds of homes on leased land.
Then white developers wanted to push owners out.
The evictions began in late 1954 and continued for 12 years through 1966 with the help of city resources. Many who lived through them recall seeing their belongings on the street and their homes on fire.
Joining me from Los Angeles is Civil Rights Attorney Areva Martin. She's representing the families.
Jeff Ballinger, Palm Springs City Attorney statement: "...this City Council has issued a formal apology and has set the city on a course to attempt to make amends for what happened back in the 1950's and 1960's. I have been in communication with Ms. Martin, and it is my hope that, with her assistance, we can continue focusing the city's resources on that course of action, rather than on unnecessary litigation."
