YouTube Description
as posted by the channelThe Frisco, Texas, Police Department released body camera footage of a black family being racially profiled and terrorized after an officer mistakenly accused them of driving a stolen vehicle.
On July 23, Demetria Heard, her husband, nephew, and 6th-grade son, were on their way to a basketball game when a police officer stopped them. The reason? The family's vehicle had out-of-state tags.
The officer, mistakingly entering the license plate with the wrong state abbreviation, received a notification that the vehicle was possibly stolen. This prompted the officer to initiate a high-risk stop, putting the lives of Demetria Heard and her family at risk. Officers pulled weapons on the family and even handcuffed her 10-year-old son.
Frisco police Chief David Shilson issued a public apology on Friday in a press release by the department.
"We made a mistake. Our department will not hide from its mistakes. Instead, we will learn from them. The officer involved quickly accepted responsibility for what happened, which speaks to integrity. I've spoken with the family. I empathize with them and completely understand why they're upset. I apologized on behalf of our department and assured them that we will hold ourselves accountable and provide transparency through the process. This incident does not reflect the high standard of service that our officers provide on a daily basis to our residents, businesses and visitors."
The police are currently conducting an internal investigation. The family has not announced if they plan to press charges.
