2:38Now PlayingIn the wake of the Carlee Russell case, an Alabama lawmaker has proposed making faking a kidnapping a felony offense.
Republican Alabama State Senator April Weaver has introduced legislation that seeks to impose prison penalties and mandatory restitution for the cost of law enforcement resources used during a fake kidnapping. Weaver argues that individuals who carry out sham kidnappings and lead law enforcement on wild goose chases must face severe penalties for their deceptive actions.
The case of Carlee Russell, who fabricated her kidnapping and sparked shock and terror in her community, is now charged with two misdemeanors.
Weaver plans to pre-file the proposed legislation for the 2024 Alabama legislative session.
