On April 21, 31-year-old Anthony Johnson allegedly did not let detention officers search his cell during routine cell checks. Jailers used pepper spray to get Johnson "under control."
While medical staff examined him, Johnson became unresponsive. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
At Tuesday's Tarrant County Court of Commissioners, Johnson's sister, Janell, was physically removed from the room after yelling and telling County Judge Tim O'Hare to look at her while she spoke about her brother.
Johnson is one of more than 60 deaths in the Tarrant County jail since Sheriff Bill Waybourn took office in 2017. Waybourn's office partially attributed the deaths to an increased population and short staffing. But the county has also been the target of lawsuits for jailers' alleged treatment of detainees.
Anthony Johnson's parents Jacqualyne and Anthony, Sr.; his sister Janell and their attorney, Daryl K. Washington spoke with Roland Martin about this truly disturbing case.
