Pope Francis is battling “mild kidney failure” alongside a severe respiratory illness that has left the 88-year-old pontiff in critical condition at a Rome hospital, the Vatican said Sunday.
Calling his condition “complex,” officials stated the kidney issue is “under control” and that no further respiratory crises had occurred since Saturday. Despite his illness, the pope remains “alert and well-oriented” and attended Mass in his hospital suite with his medical team.
