YouTube Description
as posted by the channelIt's a decision that hits home for Black communities fighting for clean air and environmental justice. The Justice Department is dropping its lawsuit against a Louisiana petrochemical plant accused of poisoning a majority-Black neighborhood--calling it a move to dismantle so-called "radical DEI programs."
For years, residents of Reserve, Louisiana, have been sounding the alarm about toxic emissions from the Denka Performance Elastomer plant, which experts say increases cancer risks in St. John the Baptist Parish.
Now, The Biden administration took the company to court in 2023, demanding action--but now, under the Trump administration, that case is gone.
With environmental justice efforts being rolled back and over 170 staffers removed from their roles, many are asking: What happens to Black communities that have already been left to suffer?
Roland Martin spoke with Tish and Robert Taylor from the Concerned Citizens of St. John Parish about the Department of Justice dropping the "cancer alley" lawsuit.
They've been on the frontlines of this fight, and they're here to break down what this decision means for their community and the future of environmental justice.
