18:42Now PlayingSouth Africa's President, Cyril Ramaphosa, arrived in D.C. Monday for a high-stakes state visit with the twice impeached, criminally convicted felon-in-chief Donald "The Con" Trump.
This meeting, both sides say, could "reset" a relationship that's grown increasingly tense over trade, land reform, and global diplomacy. Ramaphosa's trip comes just days after the U.S. resettled dozens of white South Africans, following Trump's claims of racial persecution--allegations South Africa strongly denies.
While the White House hasn't released a detailed schedule, Ramaphosa's office says the focus will be on reframing economic and commercial ties. With U.S. tariffs and aid cuts looming, South Africa hopes to secure new trade agreements and ease diplomatic tensions.
Johanna Leblanc, a partner at Adomi Advisory Group and an expert in foreign policy and national security, spoke with Roland Martin about what's at stake and what this visit could mean for U.S.-Africa relations.
