Shut out of white-dominated newsrooms, Black journalists didn’t wait for permission. They organized, signed on anyway, and built lasting power where exclusion was the rule.
For decades, Black journalists were excluded from editorial power and decision-making in American newsrooms. With no editors advocating for their stories and constant job precarity, they organized themselves rather than accept erasure. What began with 44 journalists in a crowded hotel room became the National Association of Black Journalists — a force built through discipline, risk, and collective resolve. This is the story of organized defiance turning neglect into institutional power.
🔥 Black journalists were routinely shut out of newsrooms, editorial meetings, and leadership roles.
🔥 Many risked their jobs by organizing anyway, signing on despite fear and retaliation.
