Mississippi Black voters are bracing for a Supreme Court ruling in the Cala case that could gut Section Two of the Voting Rights Act. A federal judge found Mississippi’s state Supreme Court districts are drawn in a way that dilutes Black voting power and ordered the legislature to redraw the maps. Legal observers warn that if Section Two is weakened, those victories could be wiped out on appeal and future challenges could become nearly impossible. Panelists argue the fallout could spread across the South by opening the door to eliminating existing Black majority districts and rolling back Black political power.
