A new investigation documents dozens of modern-day lynchings across the South, challenging the long-held belief that this terror ended decades ago.
A new report examining deaths across seven Southern states identifies at least 70 modern-day lynchings between 2000 and 2025. Researchers say many of these cases were originally ruled suicides or suspicious deaths before deeper investigation revealed evidence of coordinated violence. The report also links the rise in these killings to online radicalization and escalating racial and anti-minority rhetoric. Investigators warn the real number could exceed 100 when unresolved suspicious deaths are considered.
