Federal judges temporarily blocked Alabama Republicans from redrawing congressional districts in a way that would effectively eliminate a majority minority district represented by Congressman Shomari Figures. The judges reaffirmed earlier findings that Alabama’s prior map intentionally discriminated against Black voters and sharply questioned why the state was suddenly trying to redraw maps in the middle of an election cycle after previously arguing courts should avoid election disruptions. The conversation connects Alabama’s latest push to broader Republican efforts to use new Supreme Court rulings to weaken Voting Rights protections and dismantle Black political representation across the South.
