Roland Martin and the RMU panel examine the 1876 Hamburg Massacre, a white supremacist attack on a thriving Black town founded by freedmen. Roland explains how the massacre became part of the political violence that helped end Reconstruction, remove federal protection from Black communities and usher in Jim Crow, which he described as “slavery without shackles for Black people.” Dr. Greg Carr says remembering Hamburg matters because “when you remember, you can see the patterns,” pointing to provocation, the weaponization of courts and law, and efforts to disarm and destroy Black political power.
