The RMU family blew past Roland Martin’s $10,000 challenge, raising $16,163 for the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center after the break-in. Now the push is on to hit $50,000.

The RMU family answered Roland Martin’s call in a major way. After launching a 24-hour challenge to raise $10,000 for the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center, the audience blew past the goal. Linda Harris reported that by midnight, 286 donors had given $10,925, and by 7:00 the next day, that number had grown to 324 donors and $16,163.

An emotional Harris said she cried after seeing the outpouring of support. She said she is a volunteer and never imagined this kind of response. The museum, which is operated by only two volunteers, is still dealing with the damage caused when thieves broke in, stole the donation box, and damaged the murals and door.

Roland Martin celebrated the audience for stepping up, then immediately raised the next challenge: hit $50,000 by Monday so the museum can quickly replace the door, repair the murals, improve security, and move toward reopening. He also said the long-term goal is to help the museum build a much larger financial cushion, with a possible $500,000 target over 12 to 18 months.
