He argued the same playbook gets used against independent voices again and again, telling people not to trust him, not to trust other independent thinkers, and ultimately not to trust themselves. Russell called out the underlying message directly, that people need to be managed and medicated rather than trusted with their own judgment. When the message becomes distrust yourself, that's usually the moment to ask why.
