He challenged the men eager to condemn him, suggesting most would behave exactly the same way if given the same opportunity and power, and that claiming celibate virtue simply because no temptation ever arrived isn't morality, it's uselessness dressed up as principle. He went further, arguing you can't really know your own capacity for good or evil until you've been in a position where your instincts had genuine free reign, because until then your character has never actually been tested. Russell listened as he connected it to a wider culture that keeps people passive, atomized, and safely untested by design.
