Modern MANPADS (Man Portable Air Defense Systems) use both the infrared and ultra violet spectrum to detect and track targets. They also contain a very narrow field of view. This makes it very difficult for a trailing missile to "lock on" to the a missile in front of it of multiple missiles were volley fired.
