Sometimes it's just not your day. I found myself standing in front of my commander for leaving my post while acting a sergeant of the guard - but I did so because the sergeant who was supposed to relieve me in a few hours had been drinking and I went to check on him. I was offered a deal - turn him in for drinking or be punished myself.

The moral of the story is that you can do everything right and sometimes it's just not your day. Take your punishment, don't do it again, and understand your career isn't over.
