In my novel “The Win Machine,” one plot point involves China’s attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records in blood donated during a single day. Since blood donation is not popular in China, it is seen as a prelude to war.
It’s a good book and you should read it.
But what other signs might we see before a full scale invasion?
Stockpiling commodities: Food, fuel, medicines, machine tools and spare parts. Basically anything that can be embargoed. Note that China now has a playbook to see how the world will react with the war in Ukraine. It might use that playbook to predict how to survive and fight with sanctions.
Rare Earth Metal Restrictions: Rare earth metals are critical components in things like LED displays, touch screens, magnets, and radars. China might stop exporting these minerals or encourage the US to divest from rare earth mining.
Restrictions on VPN usage: VPNs or Virtual Private Networks act as tunnels to connect your computer to a “private” network. This might be your workplace, or it might be a VPN service that allows you to bypass local censorship or restrictions. Technically, VPN usage is banned in China without special permission. However, this ban isn’t aggressively enforced. If tourists and expatriates suddenly find the bans enforced, it could be an indicator.
Divesture of markets: You might see China divest from American and Western markets along with the purchase of more gold. You might also see China shift toward the homegrown CIPS banking system over the international SWIFT banking system.
Disinformation: China will use disinformation as a weapons effector with kinetic effects on target.
