as posted by the channelPresident Trump signed an executive order as reported by the DOD. It seems like these troops are performing ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) missions as well as engineering and transportation support. While it is possible to use federal troops to patrol the border with weapons. the Posse Comitatus Act prevents federal troops from performing in a law enforcement role. Note that the National Guard is exempt from this. There is also another issue with using troops to physically patrol the border with weapons - all units have a training schedule, and when performing the border mission, they are not training to carry out their traditional wartime mission.
