The basic idea behind the current administration's strategy with Ukraine is to establish some sort of peace deal or cease-fire whether it benefits Ukraine, Russia, both, or neither. This would end the war, and allow the US to bring troops back from Europe for possible redeployment to the Pacific Theater.
The issue with this path is that countries may be more reluctant to purchase American weapons systems or share intelligence with America. This could make weapons more expensive due to lack of economies of scale or and America less safe.
