I just got back from the U.S. Army Mountain Warfare School in Jericho, Vermont, and let me tell you, this place is unlike any other Army school I’ve seen.

Every U.S. adversary has mountains: Russia, China, Iran, North Korea. Even Taiwan is basically jungle-covered ridgelines with no easy way in or out. If you’re planning real operations—not just drawing arrows on a PowerPoint—you need to know how to move, fight, and survive in mountains.

That’s what this school teaches. Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, even international partners come here to learn rope work, casualty evacuation, mountain marksmanship, and how to think in terrain where the margin for error is razor thin.

The instructors aren’t just cycling through on orders. Many of them are actual mountaineers with years of experience. They treat the school like a lab, constantly updating doctrine, gear, and techniques based on what works in the field.

This isn’t Ranger School. There’s no badge-protection screaming. It’s about problem-solving in some of the harshest conditions soldiers will ever face.

I’ll walk you through the courses, the gear, the terrain—and even what it’s like to shoot and climb in the mountains.
