Canada is finally replacing its aging CF-18 fighter jets from the 1980s — but what should have been a straightforward defense procurement has turned into a geopolitical mess.
Canada is contractually obligated to buy 16 F-35s, but the remaining 72 aircraft are now under review. Those jets could still be F-35s… or they could be replaced by Sweden’s Saab Gripen.
And that decision has less to do with aerodynamics, and a lot more to do with politics, trade wars, alliances, and NORAD.
