Zero Trust sounds like another cybersecurity buzzword a vendor uses before trying to sell you a dashboard and a license.
But in Operational Technology — the systems that run water treatment plants, power grids, pipelines, factories, rail systems, and building automation — Zero Trust is a very different problem.
In IT, a bad security policy might lock someone out of SharePoint.
In OT, a bad security policy might shut down a pump, damage equipment, contaminate water, or put people in danger.
In this video, I break down what Zero Trust actually means, why it matters for critical infrastructure, and why you cannot just copy and paste an IT security model into a factory or municipal water system and call it good.
We’ll talk about:
- What Operational Technology actually is
- Why legacy industrial systems are hard to secure
- Why “trust but verify” is dead
- Why you should assume the attacker may already be inside
- How segmentation, jump hosts, identity, monitoring, response, and recovery actually work
- Why cybersecurity people and engineers need to be in the same room
Zero Trust is not about buying a product.
It is about limiting what an attacker can reach, verifying who is doing what, monitoring for weird behavior, and not breaking the physical process you are trying to protect.
Because in IT, the mission is usually data.
In Operational Technology, the mission is keeping the lights on, the water clean, the trains moving, the doors opening, and the machines not killing anyone.
