Are sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln reaching their breaking point?
Social media is flooded with reports of food shortages, moldy showers, broken laundry facilities and sailors running out of basic supplies. Some of those claims are exaggerated, recycled or impossible to verify, but the underlying problem appears to be real.
In this video, I examine what we actually know about conditions aboard the Lincoln, how Navy replenishment works, why an eleven-carrier fleet cannot keep eleven carriers deployed, and how months of high-tempo combat operations affect sailors, aircraft and ship maintenance.
The crew is still launching aircraft and completing its mission. That is evidence of its professionalism, not proof that the situation is sustainable.
Don’t believe every photograph of bad chow or every secondhand story from somebody’s nephew. But don’t ignore the warning: America is asking its Navy to meet commitments it may no longer have enough ships and sailors to sustain. The crew of the USS Abraham Lincoln is absorbing the difference—and eventually, something or someone is going to break.
