1:33Now PlayingSaint Lucia is a constitutional monarchy in which governing powers of the monarchy are restricted by constitution.
Commissioner of the Electoral Commission, Michael Flood, said despite the poor weather, registered voters still showed up in large numbers.
“In as much as it is raining, Saint Lucians turned out in large numbers at quite an early stage, so many people have voted which shows that there is great interest in this election. For a constituency with over 20,000 electors, based on what I'm seeing, I believe people will turn out to support the various candidates."
Flood noted the importance of his role to the democratic process.
“My role is to go throughout the island to ensure that the process is being conducted smoothly and to assist poll workers by liaising with the office to ensure that whatever issues they encounter are taken care of."
The candidates for Gros-Islet are Lenard "Spider" Montoute for the United Worker’s Party, Emma Hippolyte of the Saint Lucia Labour Party, and Independent Candidate Therold Prudent.
Polling division A1 B was located at the Gros Islet Secondary School where registered voters from the communities of Belle Vue, Bella Rosa, Beausejour and Cas en Bas exercised their voting franchise.
