Director of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), Ms. Dorine Gustave, has cautioned that a Tropical Storm Warning is still in effect for Saint Lucia. As such, residents are asked to remain vigilant as Tropical Storm Elsa approaches.
As of 5 a.m. today, July 2, Tropical Storm Elsa was located at about 185 miles or 297 kilometers east-southeast of Saint Lucia. The storm will begin to affect Saint Lucia at about 8 a.m, with the heaviest rains expected between 8 a.m. and 12 noon.
“Everyone is advised to remain indoors until the ALL CLEAR is given,” Ms. Gustave said. “During the storm, listen to the television or radio for updates. Avoid open flames such as candles and kerosene lamps. If power is lost, turn off major appliances to reduce power surges.”
She continued: “Please note that a discontinuation of the system by the Saint Lucia Met. Office does not mean an ALL CLEAR. An ALL CLEAR can only be given by the Prime Minister or NEMO. Please be reminded that the national shutdown is still in effect until otherwise informed by the Prime Minister or by NEMO. Thank you, and please stay safe.”
Severe flooding and landslides are possible with onset of rainfall today, the Saint Lucia Met. Services has warned. Consequently, NEMO urges increased caution for residents in areas prone to these hazards.
