Soufriere, Saint Lucia — WaterWays Caribbean, in collaboration with the Soufriere Regional Development Foundation (SRDF), will officially launch the Flowing Clean project on Wednesday 5th June 2025 at the Soufriere Primary School.
Coinciding with World Environment Day, the launch introduces a community-based initiative focused on restoring the Soufriere River through local stewardship, education, and practical environmental action.
Titled Flowing Clean: Communities Taking Responsibility for the Restoration of the Soufriere River System, the project is funded by the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) with support from ProCaribe. It seeks to address solid waste pollution, support citizen science activities, and build public awareness about the ecological importance of the river.
The Soufriere River connects inland communities to a sensitive coastal zone that includes the Soufriere Marine Management Area (SMMA) and the marine section of the Pitons Management Area. Years of land-based pollution and mismanagement have affected water quality, traditional use, and public health.
Flowing Clean is designed to mobilize community pride and responsibility as a foundation for long- term environmental protection and stronger pollution control systems within the Soufriere watershed.
