"A couple of months ago, at our Miss America orientation, we were all asked to write down a word that described us. So I thought, OK, if I had one word that’s going to be able to represent who I am, what would it be? And I decided it was activist. Because activism has always been a part of who I am.
Two years ago I graduated from the University of Michigan, and I had no idea what the commencement would entail. I was expecting the speeches to be like, “You did it!” or “Good luck with your college debt!” But once the commencement speech started, the speaker started touting sentiments like, “Safe spaces and trigger warnings are for weak people,” or calling people “snowflakes.” And as a survivor of sexual assault (who has struggled with PTSD), I felt really uncomfortable. But I was also feeling for the many people who had experienced a lot of that hardship too."*
