"Sunday interview between John Bolton, the President’s current national security adviser, and CNN’s Jake Tapper may have sent some running for their nearest history book. Discussing Trump and potential United States’ intervention to convince Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro to resign, Bolton said, “In this administration, we're not afraid to use the word Monroe Doctrine.”
Bolton was referring to an 1820s policy from President James Monroe, when the United States resolved to prevent European colonization or intervention in the western hemisphere newly-independent nations. In context, Tapper was questioning Bolton’s position on intervening in Venezuelan affairs, while allowing leeway for other troubled regimes across the globe, including Saudi Arabia and their record of human rights abuses."*
