GOP Gov. Regrets Banning Mask Mandates As Covid Crushes Arkansas

Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson wants to reverse a bill he signed in April that prohibits state and local officials from enforcing Covid-19 mask requirements. “In hindsight, I wish that had not become law,” said Hutchinson, who is now asking lawmakers to allow local school districts to adopt mask mandates now that the Delta variant of the virus is decimating his state.

Sam Seder: Hey, let's check in on Asa Hutchinson, whose Republican party has been denying uh you know the uh danger of covid-19. uh whose party has been um um in Arkansas in fact hey here's a funny story so asa hutchinson a couple months ago he signed some legislation that said uh you ca you cannot no municipality state nothing can have a mask mandate no masks in schools no masks anywhere we're done with this and i'm a strong leader i'm a strong leader not only am i not going to issue a mask mandate he says a couple months ago i'm not allowed anybody in any context to do that is it impingement upon freedom except uh oh here is asa hutchinson doing what we call the backup i signed it for those reasons that our cases were at a low point everything has changed now and yes in hindsight i wish that had not become law but it is the law and the only chance we have is either to amend it or for the courts to say that it has an unconstitutional foundation you know what would have been a great move for him back in back in the day when he signed this was to to just have not signed it that would have been a great move like why would you need to sign a masked band i know it's performative it's for his it's for his base but like you know you could adjust you know you said it you just said it yeah this is these this is so masturbatory and frankly also you know like all the people who are not these right you know wingers who you know you gotta own the libs that's what our whole point is as a party and an ideology own the libs if it means that we're gonna prevent people from protecting themselves all those also those morons who are like hey man like i saw a dude walking down the street wearing a mask and it's like come on man what's your problem like the and i'm talking about you know the the the really smart people on twitter you know you know the the the data analysts and the people who are like i'm gonna do some like amateur uh epidemiology here and you know like but people are being overly cautious the cost associated with being overly cautious in certain terms of like wearing masks is so minimal and the cost associated with seeing people wearing masks is beyond even measurable it's so small but yet a bunch of morons were like you know it's like it's so it's just incomprehensible to me like one percent of kids that get infected might have long coveted symptoms like weeks and weeks in advance but you know let's not be over cautious
