Emma: This is our global system which the United States is the leader of. it puts poorer countries and countries that don't have the bargaining power that the US or the UK or Germany or Israel has with some of these now vaccine manufacturers but before that the money that was necessary to get these supplies the pandemic profiteers are also the people who have cemented and profited off of the vaccine apartheid and the the the gulf in between in care and supplies for covid.
Nichols: That's exactly right. and I'm so glad you went there. I expected you would Emma because you're such a good reporter and such a good journalist who's aware of these things. I wish more were. and there's a chapter in my book on mike Pompeo who was in a key position at this point. and Pompeo again and again you know interrupted undermined assaulted international cooperation for political purposes. He's positioning himself to be a potential presidential candidate. and the result was that at a time when the United States could have led internationally to deal with a global pandemic we failed to do so. we undermined international cooperation at many points along the way. now at the same time and I write about this a lot in the book. We poured money into research and development that helped the pharmaceutical companies to develop the vaccines. they didn't, they didn't like you know, run into the lab themselves and come up with this. They were part of a global effort to find a response to this global pandemic. And you know it's one thing to understand pharmaceutical companies don't like doing vaccines. They much prefer a drug that you can get a prescription to and you have to take every day for the rest of your life. because they can make a lot of assured ongoing money from that. but they were going to do the vaccines. and the US government went out of its way to make it easy for them to profit.
