How To Talk To Your Conservative Relatives This Thanksgiving

A listener calls in and asks how to get conservative parents to take progressive positions over the holidays. Countering what they say can cause tension and creates a hostile environment around the dinner table. Just letting them spout off about things isn't good either. One way is to find something they care about where you can find a middle ground, like Social Security or Medicare.

Hi, this is me. yeah, it's you. Hi, this is Jack from Boston. Thanks for taking my call. Jack from Boston what's on your mind? so I just got back from seeing my folks. My whole family is just super Republican too. I'm really, really sorry. are they in Boston too. no, they are in Long Island. All right, sorry man. no, don't worry. so I guess I was wondering what you guys think. I've tried to find out the reason with them. I get nowhere. when I'm sitting at the table like Thanksgiving or whatever and they just start spouting nonsense. I feel like I sort of have two options: I can either just, you know, try to push back. in which case I've created this hostility. and it's just uncomfortable. or I can just let them spew nonsense and then I feel like I'm spineless. well, this is what you do. you find something that they care about that they're not talking about. like I don't know are your parents on Social Security. They have met. I know they have Medicare. not yet. not yet. Are they looking forward to that? Are they people like have they ever liked you know I think like dropping something in there like it's not gonna hurt you guys when they cut Medicare and Social Security is it, Mom and Dad? well, it's Social Security's not going to be there anyways it's going bankrupt in five years. it's not actually going bankrupt in five years. they can simply easily just increase the taxes. or not even increase the actual taxes just to lift the cap on Social Security. but even if they do nothing it'll still pay out 80 percent. but not if the Republicans get their hands on it. they will do cuts to social security. or I don't know you got to find I mean Social Security and Medicare are always the ones I like to go to when we're talking about parents. because if they're not getting it yet they will be soon.
