McConnell disputes this characterization and believes there were other reasons why certain Republican candidates struggled to win their races: "We underperformed among independents and moderates because their impression of many of the people in our party and leadership roles is that they're involved in chaos, negativity, excessive attacks and it frightened independent and moderate Republican voters." Later, McConnell won a secret-ballot leadership election putting him on pace to become the longest-serving Senate party leader in US history.
