City Conducting Terror Campaign On The Homeless

The city government of Sante Fe is conducting a campaign to rid the area of the homeless. Laws are being put in place to restrict "camping" and police are given free rein to do wherever they want to the most vulnerable people in the city.

Hey well, I wanted to start by just saying that I appreciated your guys' response to a call from last Thursday just I think the caller was talking about you know issues around homelessness. And you know some of the common criticisms or are kind of public perceptions of the homeless. And I appreciate you guys talking about you know the importance of housing first and the effects of mental illness on the homeless population and you know those sorts of things. I'm somebody that works with the homeless here in New Mexico in Santa Fe. And yeah I have to respond to a lot of those criticisms all the time and it gets pretty tiring. So it's kind of nice to see you know people like yourselves who have a lot of respect for it, just kind of you know having a larger platform than me talking about that kind of stuff. Yeah in a way I think is very important. So, yeah, I wanted to talk a little bit about what's been going on in Santa Fe around the homeless. Sure. I think pretty much it's the same across the country from what I've found. But I think it's kind of helpful to kind of paint exactly what the issues are. And I want to start first by talking about how Santa Fe right now has a very hostile relationship with the homeless particularly. In the past few months there have been real efforts to, I guess my opinion, basically force them out of the city. The city government has basically given the police a kind of free reign to push people out basically. To constantly harass people they have laws on the books about public camping or this and that. Public nuisances. Then they're basically enforcing those laws to the maximum. To the point where essentially it is illegal to be homeless. Right. If you're a homeless person and you're sitting in a public park all day. The police can come by and say oh well they're camping because they're here with all their stuff all day long. So we're gonna round them up, put them in jail, maybe take their stuff and throw it away. That's been happening on a massive increase lately. And it comes at the same time that over the winter when it actually got this coldest in January and February the city put out an order basically for bidding services to provide tents and sleeping bags to the homeless. And because in their words they didn't want to encourage camping in public. Oh yeah right yeah I honestly was thinking about getting like a sun chair to maybe just sit in the park when I read like with cup holders and stuff. A beach chair. Now I'm just thinking I'm just gonna sleep outside. because I have that chair out there. That's how it works right?
