7:21Now PlayingRepublicans are intensifying their war on poor Americans by implementing work requirements into their proposal to raise the debt limit. Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) expressed her support for this proposal, saying that "This is something that people across the country have asked for, and we've delivered." However, there is no evidence to support this claim. In fact, polls show that a majority of Americans oppose work requirements for welfare recipients.
The proposed work requirements would make it more difficult for low-income Americans to access food stamps, housing assistance, and other essential programs. They would also disproportionately impact women, children, and people with disabilities.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) told CNN's Michael Smerconish that he believes that there are twice as many holdouts among the House Republican caucus in regards to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's debt limit proposal then would be needed to sink the legislation during a floor vote.
