as posted by the channelIn an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper, Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin talked about California Sen. Dianne Feinstein's prolonged absence from the Senate. Feinstein, who is 89 years old, has been absent from the Senate since January 2023.
Durbin said that they need Feinstein in order to conduct important Senate work, such as confirming judicial nominees and issuing subpoenas.
"We need her," Durbin said. "We need her experience. We need her judgment. We need her institutional knowledge."
Tapper responded to Durbin by saying that he and his fellow Democrats were "very ginger and very polite" when it came to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and not pushing her to retire when they had a Democratic majority in the Senate.
"How'd that work out for you?" Tapper asked. "How'd that work out for Roe v. Wade?"
With a 50-50 split in the Senate, Democrats need every vote they can get in order to confirm judicial nominees and pass legislation. Feinstein's absence is a major blow to Democrats, and it is unclear when or if she will be able to return to the Senate.
