Eighty-nine-year-old Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) returned to Congress in a wheelchair yesterday after missing a month and change worth of work with a painful case of shingles. However, the steady stream of leaks about her cognitive decline continues to flow.
A report from Politico's Ben Terrison Thursday included a particularly troubling anecdote about Feinstein confusing Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) with Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) shortly after Warnock's election to the upper chamber of Congress in 2021.
This is not the first time that Feinstein's cognitive abilities have been called into question. In 2020, The New Yorker published a report that detailed how Feinstein had been struggling with memory loss and had difficulty following conversations.
Feinstein's age and health are a serious concern for her constituents and the country. She is the oldest sitting senator in history, and she has been in office for over 30 years. Her cognitive decline is a reminder that even the most experienced and accomplished leaders are not immune to the effects of aging.
It is time for Feinstein to step aside and allow someone else to represent California in the Senate. Her constituents deserve a senator who is fully present and capable of serving them.
