16:56Now PlayingFatima Moussa Mohammed, a student at the CUNY School of Law, delivered a powerful speech at her graduation ceremony on May 19, calling for an end to Israeli aggression against Palestinians. Mohammed spoke about the daily hardships faced by Palestinians under Israeli occupation, including the denial of basic human rights, the destruction of homes and infrastructure, and the killing of civilians. She also spoke about the importance of international law and the need for the international community to take action to protect Palestinian rights.
The CUNY Chancellor and Board of Trustees issued a statement denouncing Mohammed's remarks, but they did not specify what they found objectionable. New York Rep. Ritchie Torres also criticized Mohammed, saying that she was "consumed by hatred for Israel."
Mohammed's speech is a reminder of the importance of speaking out for human rights, even when it is unpopular. Her speech has also sparked a much-needed conversation about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the role of law schools in addressing human rights issues.
