During the Watergate scandal in 1973, allegations of secret bombings in Cambodia came to light, leading to an attempt to impeach President Nixon for waging a covert war in a neutral country. However, the article of impeachment related to the secret bombings was ultimately voted down for political reasons, and Nixon resigned from office due to other charges. When questioned about the bombings, Henry Kissinger, then national security adviser, dismissed the significance of the bombings and denied significant casualties. In an interview with journalist David Frost, Kissinger denied that Base Area 704 was bombed, pointing out a typographical error and stating that "base area 740" was actually attacked. However, it was later revealed that there were 1,136 civilians living in Base Area 740, with only 250 enemy forces present. Confidential military documents confirmed that civilians were indeed killed and wounded by B-52 strikes in the area.
