YouTube Description
as posted by the channelRobin D. G. Kelley, Distinguished Professor and Gary B. Nash Endowed Chair in U.S. History, joins the show to discuss about the origins of Juneteenth. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, originated in the United States as a commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The history of Juneteenth dates back to June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas. This announcement came two months after the end of the Civil War and over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. The delay in delivering this news was due to various factors, including the resistance of slaveholders and the limited presence of Union troops in Texas. As word spread and celebrations erupted, Juneteenth became a symbol of freedom and a time for African Americans to gather, reflect on their heritage, and honor their ancestors who had endured the hardships of slavery. Over the years, Juneteenth has grown in significance and is now recognized as a time to commemorate the end of slavery, reflect on the ongoing struggle for racial equality, and celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans to American society.
