Emma talks to Sam Russek, reporter and researcher at The New Republic, to discuss his recent piece on the upcoming Houston mayoral race. In late May, just six months before the upcoming election to determine his successor, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner expressed his opposition to another state bill aimed at limiting his governing powers. This bill was part of a series of Republican-led attacks on various local institutions, including the school board and elections administrator, with implications for future election outcomes. The bill in question focused on a longstanding dispute with firefighters over labor issues. While acknowledging its potential political benefits, Turner warned that it would negatively impact Houston's financial future. In directing his comments from City Hall, Turner took a veiled swipe at state Senator John Whitmire, the bill's author and a fellow Democrat who is the frontrunner in the mayoral race. Subsequently, in early June, Governor Greg Abbott signed the bill into law, which enforces binding arbitration between firefighters and the city, ultimately resolving the six-year conflict and granting public workers, particularly firefighters, the right to negotiate and reach resolutions rather than being subject to the mayor's sole discretion.
