Matthew Connolly, professor of international and global history at Columbia University, to discuss his recent book The Declassification Engine: What History Reveals About America’s Top Secrets. Trump's handling of classified documents is just a symptom of a much larger problem. In the United States, a multitude of new secrets are generated daily by the government, leaving us to question the true purpose and beneficiaries of such secrecy. Prior to World War II, transparency was a cherished American tradition, with the withholding of information considered un-American except in extreme circumstances. However, post-war, the allure of maintaining control over what remains hidden proved too strong to resist. Consequently, the country strayed significantly from its open tradition, allowing intelligence agencies, black sites, and classified laboratories to flourish unchecked. The government argues that secrecy is necessary for national security, yet the concealed costs of this approach have been overlooked for too long.
