Recently, Finland's far-right finance minister, Riikka Purra, apologized for racist comments she posted 15 years ago that recently came to light. These comments, which she referred to as "stupid," have caused harm and resentment. Purra's Finns Party secured high-profile cabinet positions in the new government of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, but the government has been facing accusations since taking office three weeks ago. In response to the controversy, President Sauli Niinisto called for a "clear stance of zero tolerance of racism," which the government soon provided. Purra's comments, made on a party colleague's blog in 2008, included racist remarks about immigrants and racial slurs. She has since confirmed that the comments were hers and acknowledged that they were "stupid or absurd" but emphasized that she would not write anything like that now. The revelations have become a significant challenge for Finland's young government and have added to other recent scandals involving members of Purra's party.
