In Rochester, New York, a religious center faced threats related to an in-person event on Palestine, leading to the relocation of the program online. Arlington, Virginia experienced bomb threats compelling the country's largest American Muslim civil rights group to move a banquet, partially focused on Gaza, to an undisclosed location. A conference organized by a prominent Palestinian rights group in Houston faced a venue withdrawal due to "escalating security concerns." In Brooklyn, a right-wing City Councilperson brought a gun to a student protest for Gaza. Additionally, in Washington, DC, a United States senator called for a Justice Department investigation into student supporters of Palestine. Amidst the ongoing bombardment of Gaza by Israel, Americans are voicing their opposition on college campuses, social media, and in the streets. However, this dissent is met with a significant and unprecedented backlash across the US, with supporters of Palestinian rights encountering condemnation of student protests, death threats, and intimidation from pro-Israel groups. Palestine Legal, a group defending free speech rights for Palestine advocates, has witnessed a remarkable surge in requests for legal assistance, addressing nearly 200 reports of the suppression of Palestinian rights advocacy since October 8th, encompassing incidents ranging from job terminations over supportive social media messages to the doxxing of student critics of Israel, listing them on a website called the 'College Terror List' with the aim of making them unemployable. According to Radhika Sainath, a senior staff attorney at Palestine Legal, there is a noticeable increase in people expressing concerns about Israel's genocidal intentions, and they are facing significant McCarthyite backlash and suppression.
