14:15Now PlayingAs the first-ever teachers strike in Portland Public Schools enters its third week, hundreds of district employees continue working in school buildings, supporting students, and maintaining operations. While the Portland Association of Teachers is on strike, representing certified teachers, coaches, and substitutes, other unions, including the District Council of Unions (DCU) for maintenance and construction workers, the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) for bus drivers, and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the Portland Federation of School Professionals (PFSP) for classified employees, are in various stages of bargaining. Classified workers, although facing increased responsibilities during the strike, are expected to continue working as their unions are not part of the strike, maintaining essential services for the district's 44,000-plus students.
